How a Community Came Together to Restore its Water System

The water source in Kenya's Obanda Village recently failed, raising health concerns for the community. However, the Obanda Cluster  came together, determined to find a solution…

What challenge did the community face?

Obanda Village, like many rural communities, has faced challenges in maintaining its water infrastructure due to a lack of resources. The water system that served the entire village had deteriorated, leading to limited access to clean water. This posed health risks to the residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly as the community relied on stagnant water for upkeep.

What did the community do as a result?

We came together and each family contributed what they were able to. We also reached out to like-minded organisations and shared what we intended to do. With the contributions and support received, we refurbished the old water tank, repaired the pipeline and replaced the damaged inverter. The work was done by members of the community and was successful!

That's wonderful! And how has this new water system impacted the community?

The successful completion of the work has brought about a tremendous

positive change in Obanda Village. With reliable access to clean water, the health and hygiene of the community have greatly improved. The risk of waterborne diseases has decreased significantly, and families now have more time for other productive activities rather than spending hours collecting water from distant sources. This has also contributed to the overall well-being and development of the village.

We are confident that the repaired water system will continue to serve Obanda Village for years to come, ensuring that future generations benefit from this essential resource.

"The repair of the water system in Obanda Village stands as a testament to the power of partnership and community support."
